Public and private schools in Rock and Walworth counties are competing for a $100,000 Calling All Communities grant from U.S. Cellular.
Communities across the country are being asked to rally around their local schools and vote for the school of their choice, said Chris Rathsack, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Wisconsin.
Public and private schools, elementary, middle and high schools, big and small schools all are eligible to win, and the 10 schools with the most votes will receive $100,000 to use however they choose.
"It's the power of community," Rathsack said. "… We know schools are in need of all the funds they can get, and we wanted to create something unique and interactive … to give back to schools and give back to our communities."
People age 18 and older may visit any U.S. Cellular store to get a code to vote online for their schools. People may vote through Jan. 15. U.S. Cellular will announce winning schools in February.
No schools in Rock or Walworth counties have broken into the top 100—but there's still plenty of time.
"Any school can win if they want to," Rathsack said. "It's how bad they want it."
The grassroots Calling All Communities campaign started last year, and more than 120,000 people cast their votes for 6,500 schools across the country. Assumption High School in Wisconsin Rapids was among the winning schools and used the money to buy new textbooks and furniture and create a scholarship fund.

janesvillean - I don't know what various types of rumors there are to classify this one. Yet it is a good idea having each teacher decide how to use a small portion - that way many smaller ideas or improvements can be made.

Rumor has it that any winning school from Janesville would divide the money amongst the teachers.
