Monroe High School survived Milton’s frantic fourth-quarter rally to post a 50-46 victory in Badger South boys basketball Friday at Monroe.
The Cheesemakers gained a 44-34 lead with 4:37 remaining, but the Red Hawks scored back-to-back baskets on two steals to pull within 44-38 at 4:23 of the fourth quarter.
Milton’s two straight baskets started a 9-0 run that got the Red Hawks within 44-43 at 2:07 on pair of free throws from Brandon Knudtson.
Alex Barenklau sank a three-point goal to put Monroe on top 47-43 as the clock ticked below two minutes. Milton cut the lead to 47-46 with 35 seconds remaining, but Monroe made three of four free throws on the stretch to seal the victory.
Knudtson finished with 18 points for Milton, while Brian Tordoff scored a game-high 25 points.
The defeat dropped Milton to 0-3 in the conference and 0-4 overall under first-year coach Zach Groelle, with the losses coming by a total of 13 points. Monroe’s three-time defending champions improved to 2-1 in the Badger South and 3-1 overall.

The Silver Eagles led 31-19 at halftime and 42-25 after three quarters.
