No decision on school snow day yet

— Janesville school officials will meet early Wednesday morning to decide whether it’s safe enough to hold school that day.

If school is delayed or called off, information will be distributed to local news media by 6 a.m., district spokeswoman Sheryl Miller said.

The information also would be sent to parents through the school district’s new automated telephone-alert system, Miller said.

As usual, school officials consult with the Van Galder Bus Co., and local law enforcement starting around 4 a.m., and the superintendent makes the decision around 5:30 a.m., Miller said.

As for sports and other activities tonight, officials plan to meet around 1:30 p.m. and announce any cancellations by 2 p.m., Miller said.

WCLO radio keeps a list of closings in the area at wclo.com/closings.

The district has one snow day built into this year’s calendar. That means there’s no makeup day required for one snow day, but any cancellations after that must be made up.

The district canceled school for weather reasons a record four times in each of the last two school years, according to Gazette records.

Well, you can always call the school superintendent real early Sunday Morning then to let her know it's Sunday & school is closed. Then ask her how is feels to get woke up at some unreasonable hour

No I was happy to get a call - then I didnt have to get up to watch TV to check. I was unhappy with the time. There is no reason to call that early.

I think the point is to use a little common sense and make the decision to have a snow day a little sooner when the winter storm was obviously going to shut things down this morning. What is the point of waiting until so late?

Complain because other cities have the call system. Complain because Jville HAS a call system and called you.
Guess some people are just never happy.

We were up until 11:00 last night and no posting by Janesville. Common sense prevailed so I told my daughter not to set her alarm so she could sleep in. Then my house was awakened at 5:30 am with the new automated alert calling system by the school system. So much for sleeping in.

Heck I was up before 5 so I could go out and start shoveling our parking area by the house and the alley (so we wouldn't pack it down driving on it) so we could head to work today. Nope they don't call work off and unfortunately for me I was the only person in my office today (others are gone for work seminar) so I couldn't call in.

Yep 5:00 am call here too. Should of let people know by the 10pm news...we were sleeping by 11 when they finally decided to get smart and call it off.
*
ChsMkr: nope I wouldn't been mad if they cancelled and the snow didn't come. I would rather be safe than sorry. Sure going longer in the summer sucks, but that is a small sacrifice to keep them safe for a potentially life threatening situation ,
*
In the end it didn't matter here, we were not going in anyways, I mean after all trash collection was cancelled, every other school in Southern Wisconsin, oh and yeah the Governor declared a emergency ! Duh what more does one need to see that it is not fit for man nor beast to be out there?
*
Please stay safe everyone, I have been listening to the scanner it is really nasty out there, stay home if possible, I don't want to have to read about you in the paper :(

My call came at exactly 5:00 AM. I appreciate their good intentions, but seriously I was not happy to be woken up that early on a snow day.

DJ...it shows up on the gazette's webssite first because school district personnel log in to the site and put it there themselves. They have to call into the other media (like Channel 3) and wait for someone at the station to post it.

Yep mine was before 5:30 too. When we had a meeting at the beginning of the year with the teachers at my sons school they said they would not call before 5:45. I want to know where the teacher got that - just after 5 is a little early!

Yes, why do they need to use the automated system for notification that the school is closed. It has worked fine in the past. Thanks for waking the kids up early on a day that they done have to.

Yeah, I saw the WCLO posting, but I'm a little worried that the cancellation still isn't showing up on Channel3000.com or any of the television stations. I'm not saying the Gazette has ever gotten anything wrong before... I'm just saying.

It would be nice to know in advance because many of the families go to work before 6am and many childcare centers close if the school district does, so what to do then go to work to have to then find out childcare is closing, so you now have to put plan b in action from work. If it is a clear decision just make it, don't nail yourself down to a time! not safe is simply not safe! many teachers drive a long way to come to work, so its not just for the kids sake.

We've declared a snow day. WE aren't setting alarms. If school is on, I guess we will just miss it. I am not waking up at 6 "to see". The governor says it is a snow emergency, no trash collection, area schools closing. Good enough for me. We are opting to not participate in this stupidity....

1 snow day, and we live in Wisconsin! They just reported that the past 2 winters, school was canceled 4 times due to weather. When will the school district get a clue and understand that more than 1 snow day is needed? I hope our new school superintendent has more common sense than the last one.

Yeah sure, and if they went ahead and cancelled school already ahead of time an equal number of you genius's would be on here complaining "How can they do that? You know the forecasters are wrong so much of the time!" Easy to gripe from these cheap seats. Guess the administration can't win.

Yep the Sheriff's dept, Snow plow dept and many others are saying stay home! They don't want you on the roads... How much more does the SDJ need? I mean it is a BLIZZARD after all. Almost every other city, and towns are already calling school off. Why wait in a situation like this?
*
Regardless if the "have" school, we will be calling in a snow day. Out here in the country conditions can go from bad to worse in a matter of minutes,in a storm such as this. We will not take the chance on trying to get to school. I know I have seen the school bus and trash truck go up/down our hill kitty wonk several times. If they can't make it up right my car sure won't. Even snow plows on occasion have difficulties...now that is bad road conditions.
*
Reminds me of a few years ago, my daughter was supposed to go on a field trip, it was so bad outside I didn't send her to school, after all the State Patrol said only drive if it was a EMERGENCY ! guess what...not only did they have school, they still sent the kids to Madison for a field trip ! What idiots, many parents were up in arms about that, but the principal did not care. She said to me we can't refund the money, so they have to go or lose out on the trip altogether. Who cares about $7, my kids safety and life is worth more than that.
*
Please be safe if you do go out there, be prepared and...

Why wait til morning? 11 inches of snow, blowing, drifting, sub zero temps - seems seems like a no brainer to me. Maybe if they make a decision earlier, families could plan child care for their children.
