— This year’s version of Beloit Memorial High School’s basketball team is good, Janesville Parker coach Ryan Masterson said after the Purple Knights were 82-61 victors over the Vikings in a Big Eight opener here Saturday night.

“But we made them look great tonight,” Masterson said. “I don’t want to take anything away from the way Beloit played, but we’re a better team than the way we played.’’

Parker (1-1) hung with the Purple Knights (2-0) halfway through the first period, but then started to lose a step as Beloit converted on easy shots in the lane. By halftime, the Knights were 20 points ahead and didn’t look back.

“We weren’t getting back on defense, we weren’t pushing the ball down the floor on offense, and we were letting them penetrate the lane at will,” Masterson said. “Our first half rebounding was awful. Overall, it was a poor effort.”

Masterson was at a loss to explain his team’s performance after an impressive 66-52 victory Delavan-Darien in a nonconference opener 10 days ago.

“I don’t know if it was the layoff, but I take responsibility for not getting them ready to go,” he said. “They (the Knights) didn’t do anything we didn’t expect, and we worked on that all week.”

Parker’s Tyler Teubert led all scorers with 18 points. Cody Simonson added 13 for the Vikings, while Sherrod Stone led Beloit with 16.
