Warhawk men, women down La Crosse
LA CROSSE Life on the road was good for UW-Whitewater on Wednesday.
Whitewater pounded host UW-La Crosse, 71-59, in a WIAC men’s basketball opener.
Dustin Mitchell, the WIAC Player of the Week, scored 17 points for Whitewater. The Warhawks’ Mike Bendall scored 14 coming off the bench, D.J. Dantzler scored 13, Phil Negri added 11 points and Alex Edmunds scored 10 points.
In other WIAC action:
-- Superior 83, River Falls 81—Dwight Hill’s lay-yup with 23 seconds left in overtime carried the Yellowjackets past the Falcons.
Aaron Anderson’s three-point shot with no time remaining in regulation forced a 71-71 tie and the overtime.
-- Oshkosh 85, Eau Claire 57—D.J. Marsh scored 31 points as the Titans beat Eau Claire at Oshkosh for the 17th straight time.
-- Stevens Point 80, Sout 59—Stevens Point ended the close first half with 24-6 run to blow out the Blue Devils.
Jatred Jenkins had 16 to lead the Pointers, who had four double-figure scorers.
-- Platteville 62, Viterbo 60—Tyler Hanson’s la-up with six seconds left gave Platteville a nonconference win over the V-Hawks at La Crosse.

Warhawk women roll
Dana Thompson carried UW-Whitewater to a 68-50 victory over UW-La Crosse in a WIAC women’s basketball opener at Whitewater.
Thompson did it all, scoring a game-high 29 points and collecting 10 rebounds for an impressive double-double. Thompson went 10 for 14 from the floor and 9 for 13 from the free-throw line.
The victory improved Whitewater to 5-0 overall. The Warhawks are ranked sixth in the D3hoops.com Division III poll and seventh in the USA Today, ESPN Division III coaches poll.
Whitewater will travel to UW-Stout in Menomonie on Saturday for a 4 p.m. game.
