Milton residents may petition to close sidewalk
MILTON City residents with “sidewalks to nowhere” could get out of shoveling them this winter under a policy approved by the Milton City Council on Monday.
Residents with dead-end sidewalks can apply to have their sidewalks temporarily closed for the winter. The city council will decide on the applications Jan. 5, and staff probably will place barricades on closed sidewalks by Jan. 8, City Administrator Todd Schmidt said.
A property owner with sidewalk ending at both property lines could have his or her entire sidewalk closed. A sidewalk that connects at one property line but not the other could be closed from the driveway to the end of the sidewalk.
To request sidewalk closure, contact the public works department in writing by Monday, Dec. 28, via e-mail, miltondpw@charter.net; fax, (608) 868-6929; or mail at Milton DPW, 430 E. High St., Suite 3, Milton, WI 53563.
Even if you apply for a closure, you must shovel your sidewalk until it is officially closed.

Get real folks...this is ALL about the City not wanting to have to maintain those fancy lighted sidewalks along the new Hwy 59/M "bypass" during the winter. The state may have paid to build it, but Milton taxpayers have to pay the light bill and take care of keeping the sidewalks clear in the winter. And another thing, apparently they can't cite citizens for not shoveling private walks until their's are clear... So there's the "rest of the story."

Too bad we can't charge the city a fine or get a refund on our city taxes because of streets that are plowed poorly or not at all.
