The Sustainable Janesville Committee is forwarding a favorable recommendation to the city council to allow deer carcasses in the city's landfill.

Concerns over chronic wasting disease and the resulting prions in the environment led to a split vote from the committee. City Councilmember Frank Perrotto, normally a non-voting member of the committee, cast the tie-breaking vote for a favorable recommendation to the city council. The group heard from high-ranking officials at the Department of Natural Resources during Tuesday's meeting. Committee chair Matt Mills, who voted against the measure, says disposing of deer in the landfill isn't fixing CWD, but containing it to buy the DNR time to remove the infected deer from Wisconsin.
