JANESVILLE Lightning put an early end to Friday night’s season opener between Beloit Memorial and Janesville Parker.
But the Vikings had put the Purple Knights away long before officials called the game with 10:04 left in the fourth quarter.
Joe Allen scored three touchdowns and Adam Vesterfelt added two scores as Parker pounded the Purple Knights, 33-6, at Monterey Stadium.
With two thunderstorm cells approaching and lightning in the area, officials called the game at 9:30 p.m.
“It was the right thing to do,” Parker coach Joe Dye said of ruling the game official despite more than 10 minutes remaining. “We had no window to get the game in with the weather the way it was, and both coaching staffs agreed that we should call the game.”
Things did not start out well for the Vikings. Vesterfelt fumbled on the first play from scrimmage at Parker’s 19, and the Purple Knights responded with a six-play scoring drive to take a 6-0 lead.
Parker responded on its next series. Allen broke loose on a 51-yard scamper to cap off a 9-play drive that tied the game with 6:48 left in the opening quarter. The 5-foot-8, 150-pound Allen finished with 128 yards rushing on only 10 carries.
The Vikings chewed up 279 yards on the ground for the game, including 230 in the first half.
Allen’s 13-yard touchdown with 2:14 left in the first quarter put the Vikings up for good. Vesterfelt followed with a 53-yard touchdown run with 11:42 left in the half as Parker started to pull away.
“We played young tonight and made some mistakes,” Dye said. “But I really thought that when we had to, we made plays.
“All I want from this football team is to get better each and every week. We’ve got one down, and plenty of things to work on to get ready for week No. 2.”
Allen’s third touchdown of the game—a 9-yard plunge up the middle—pushed the lead to 26-6 midway through the second quarter.
As well as the Vikings moved the ball on the ground, the defense was in midseason form. Beloit managed only 67 yards of offense, including a mere 35 on the ground on 25 attempts.
Vesterfelt, a bruising 200-pound sophomore, led all rushers with 147 yards on 19 carries. He scored the only touchdown of the second half with a 4-yard run with 10:45 left in the game.
