JANESVILLE The illustrious high school swim career of Hailey Schneider will come to a close this season.
The Janesville Craig senior holds six individual school records and has her sights set on the remaining two.
Schneider and her Cougar teammates open the season Friday when they host Sun Prairie in a Big Eight meet.
The Cougars, 3-6 a year ago in the conference, have plenty of talent to go along with Schneider—a third- and fifth-place finisher a year ago at the WIAA Division 1 state meet.
“This year, we want to get a couple individuals, as well as a relay team or two, through to state,” Craig second-year coach Brian Kitzman said.
Schneider will finish her high school career as the greatest female swimmer in Craig history, and one of the most successful ever from the city. She has qualified for state all three years and reached the podium last year by finishing third in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 breaststroke.
“I’ve been around high school swimmers for more than 10 years, and Hailey is the hardest working one I’ve ever seen,” Kitzman said.
“Hailey’s really challenged herself this year because she wants to go out with a bang. She wants all eight invidual school records, and the relays, as well. And that is a very attainable goal.”
Schneider is backed by a strong supporting cast. Senior Becky Collins will compete in the sprint freestyle events, and junior Chloe Gansen in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.
Juniors Emily Legreid and Amanda Marklein will swim the distance freestyle events, and junior Danielle Washington in the freestyle sprints.
Junior Morgan Vosters also is a freestyle sprinter, while sophomore Ashley Fry will compete in the sprints and the butterfly.
“We want to win four dual meets and finish well at the end of the season. And the most important one is to get as many girls to state as we can,” Kitzman said.”
