Craig Invitational tennis cut short by rain
Rain cut short the Janesville Craig Invitational tennis tournament Wednesday while the championship and third-place matches were being played.
Craig High’s girls team split its first two matches and was tied with Wauwatosa East, 2-2, when the rain hit during the third-place match.
Fort Atkinson and Monroe won their first two matches and were tied, 2-2, in the championship match when rain halted play.
Craig coach Camilla Owen was pleased with the play of No. 1 doubles team Hailey Smith and Taylor Storbakken, who won all three matches.
“It was a good start for them,” said Owen.
No. 3 singles player Maggie Bolton won both of her matches, and the No. 4 doubles team of Ciarra Sroda and Minaliza Shahlapour went 2-1.
Owen also was pleased with the way the Cougars played against Monroe in a 4-3 defeat, which featured several close matches.
“We lost to them, 7-0, last year with almost all the same people, so that’s an improvement,” Owen said. “We have to work on our strategy. When we’re ahead, we have to take advantage and fight hard. We had our chances.”
The Cougars host another invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday. Monona Grove, Madison La Follette, Pewaukee, Waukesha West, Oconomowoc, Jefferson and Lake Geneva Badger will join Craig in the event, which will be played at Palmer Park, Marshall Middle School and Craig.
