JANESVILLE The season-opening high school boys soccer match between Janesville Craig and Janesville Parker was filled with plenty of first-half fireworks.
The teams combined to score five goals in the first 40 minutes, with Craig taking a 3-2 nonconference victory and the first three points in the two-city series between Craig, Parker and Beloit Memorial.
The teams will play each other three times, with the winner receiving three points and one point awarded for a tie. The series will conclude with the two-city triangular on Sept. 26.
Parker and Craig roared out of the chute.
"Both teams came out really hard," Parker coach Andy Holmes said. "It was really a clean game, better than in years past.''
Holmes said the Cougars had the edge in experience.
"The Craig team is a little older and experienced, and it showed," Holmes said. "It was a very exciting game, and we get to play two more times.''
Craig's Jesse Davila scored the winning goal with an assist from Tom Kitching at 36 minutes, for the 3-2 lead.
Edison Davila gave Parker a 1-0 lead at the eight-minute mark. Kitching tied it, 1-1, at 23 minutes. Carlos Sagrero put Parker ahead, 2-1, at 28 minutes before Brian Alvarez connected at 29 minutes to tie it 2-2 and Jesse Davila buried the winning shot.
"Both teams had plenty of chances to score in the second half," Holmes said. "Some were at point-blank range, but I don't know how they didn't go in.''
Parker goalkeeper Sergio Estrada had 23 saves, while Craig's Mike White had 10.

I was a keeper during my time at Craig, and I would say that photo 7 probably did not deserve a PK. A keeper can do almost anything on those plays, as long as he's going after the ball. Mike was going for the ball there, missed it, and the picture was taken after he failed to catch it. The play seemed completely legal to me

NV - You are correct...the picture I was looking at was what looked like it could be a dangerous play (high kick). Pic 7 sure looks a lot like it should have been a PK, although being at the game I know it wasn't called. The next phase of the Beloit-Janesville Cup happens tomorrow when the Purple Knight and Vikings hook up in Janesville!

NV - I was at the game and can assure you there was no PK if that incident took place in the box. The referees did a nice job in the game overall. It looks like Parker may have taken a hit with some grade issues after this game. I wonder how they got to play against Craig but not againt Cambridge-Deerfield?

Sounds like a great game. Can I assume that Parker was awarded a PK if that action occured in the area in photo 7?
