Despite the lure of possible stimulus funds, the Janesville City Council voted against pursuing bids for an east side water tower.
Some council members cited the importance of maintaining a level of service, while others said Janesville residents couldn't afford another utility rate hike. The city is awaiting approval from the state's Public Service Commission for an increase in water utility rates. Approval of the water tower could have meant the second increase for water utility customers in 12 months.
The council voted 4-3 against the tower, with George Brunner, Frank Perrotto and Russ Steeber voting for it.
