Rock County home sales may be showing some signs of life.
Outgoing President of the Rock Green Realtors Association, Vera Saladino, says the number of home sales this summer could be better than last year. She says more people are turning out for open house activities as well. Incoming president Paula Carrier says home prices haven't completely collapsed as some people predicted.
She says sellers are getting about 95% of the asking price, with values down about 9% across the board.

If I'm not mistaken, when the overall tax assessment value of Janesville homes increases, the tax % decreases so that the city isn't collecting more tax $ then approved. Conversely, if the tax assessed value of Janesville homes dropped, the tax % would increase. So, on the whole, the $ collected by the city will be the same. It's just the individuals who's home values who have been reassessed that would see any increase or decrease in property taxes.

Why don't you interview someone less biased or alternately look up the statistics available on at the extension service of UW. This just isn't factually true, as anyone who looks at all the for-sale houses in the area can see. Houses are not selling, yet, and this is the big point, our values for taxes go up and up. Has there ever been an example of a municipality lowering the appraised values of the houses, even in a downturn economy such as ours?
