Local preps set to report for duty

— Practice makes perfect.

At least that's what those participating in high school fall sports hope is the case.


Reporting dates for four Janesville sports are next week. Three other sports start Monday, Aug. 17.


Craig's athletic code meeting is 6:30 p.m. Monday in the high school auditorium, and Parker's is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the school's large auditorium. Freshmen and others who did not attend a code meeting during the 2008-09 school year must attend and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.


Physical exam or alternate-year cards must be on file with the school's athletic department before an athlete is permitted to practice.


Practice information for the sports at each school:


CRAIG
Football

Reporting dates—Equipment will be issued, and fitness testing will be conducted Monday. Tests are at 9 a.m., seniors; 9:30 a.m., juniors; 10 a.m., sophomores; 10:30 a.m., freshmen. Equipment issue is at the same time for each class.


First practice for sophomores, juniors and seniors is 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. First freshman practice is 9-11:30 a.m. Wednesday.


All teams will work out on the practice field north of the building. Players should wear shorts and T-shirt the first three days. After that, pads are required.

First game—Friday, Aug. 28, at Sun Prairie, 7 p.m.


Boys Soccer

Reporting date—First practice at all levels is 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday, Aug. 10, on the soccer field south of the building. Players will meet at the greenhouse.They should wear soccer shoes, socks, shin pads, white T-shirt and shorts.


Head coach—Charles Friedrich.


First game—Tuesday, Aug. 18, Janesville Parker (non-conference), 7 p.m.


Girls Swim

Reporting date—First practice for freshmen, junior varsity and varsity is 3-6 p.m.Tuesday, at the Craig High pool.


Head coach—Brian Kitzman.


First meet—Friday, Aug. 28, Sun Prairie, 5 p.m.


Girls Tennis

Reporting dates—A meeting of players and parents is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Craig tennis courts. First practice is 9-11 a.m.Tuesday at the Palmer Park courts. Players should wear shorts and T-shirt.


Head coach—Camilla Owen.


First meet—Wednesday, Aug. 19, Craig Invitational, 8:30 a.m.


Girls Volleyball

Reporting dates—First practice is Monday, Aug. 17, in the Craig High main gymnasium. Varsity, junior varsity and freshmen: 7:45 a.m.-noon. Players should wear shorts,Tshirt, kneepads and volleyball shoes.


Head coach—Blake Budrow.


First match— Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28-29, at Whitewater tournament.


Girls Golf

Reporting date—Players at all levels should report to Room 5 at Craig for a 9-11 a.m. session Monday. Equipment will be issued.


Head coach—Domanic Wiegel.


First meet—Friday, Aug. 14, at Edgewood Invitational, 9 a.m.


Cross Country

Reporting date—First practice at all boys and girls levels is 8-10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17. Runners will meet in the upper pavilion at Palmer Park. Candidates are encouraged to bring water.They should wear running shoes and clothes suitable for the weather.


Head coaches—Jessica and Brian Lawton.


First meet—Thursday, Aug. 27, at Milton Rock Run, 4 p.m.


PARKER
Football

Reporting dates—Equipment will be issued Monday. Seniors: 7:30-8:30 a.m.; Juniors: 8:30-9:30; Sophomores: 9:30-10:30; Freshmen: 10:30-11:30.


Varsity and sophomore practice begins at 7:30 a.m.Tuesday on the Parker practice fields. Freshman practice begins at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, also on the Parker practice fields.


Players should be report dressed for practice—shorts,T-shirt and football shoes.


Head coach: Joe Dye.


First game: Friday, Aug. 28, Beloit Memorial, Monterey Stadium, 7 p.m.


Boys Soccer

Reporting date—First practice at all levels is 9 a.m. to noon on Monday at the Parker varsity soccer field. Practices are scheduled for those times Monday through Friday of the first week.


Head coach—Andy Holmes.


First game—Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Janesville Craig (non-conference), 7 p.m.


Girls Swim

Reporting date—First practice at all levels is 8 a.m.Tuesday, at Parker pool. Practices will be 8-10:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 2:30-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Girls Tennis

Reporting date—First practice for all levels is 4-6:30 p.m.Tuesday at the Parker High courts.

Girls Volleyball

Girls Golf

Reporting date—First practice for freshmen and first-year players is 8:45-9:45 a.m. Monday at Riverside Golf Course; 9:45-11:30 a.m. Monday for all levels at Riverside. The practice and meet schedule will be distributed the first day. Players should bring clubs and golf shoes.

Cross Country

Reporting date—First practice for boys at all levels is 8-9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at Parker High. First practice for girls at all levels is 9-10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at Rockport Park. Boys should meet at the Parker pool entrance, girls at Rockport Park.
