Mustangs lose home opener

The South Milwaukee Rage rallied from a 20-12 halftime deficit to defeat the Rockport Mustangs, 34-26, in an eight-man Gridiron Football League game here Friday night at Marshall Middle School.

After the Rage tied it at 20-20, Rockport regained the lead at 26-20. The Mustangs failed on an attempt for a two-point conversion, and South Milwaukee took the lead for good at 28-26 with just over two minutes left. The Rage returned a pass interception for the final touchdown.

Rockport's David Byerley completed 11 of 21 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns. Jake Schlegel of the Mustangs had two receptions for 103 and a touchdown, and teammate Curtis Parker caught five passes for 104 yards. David Harper caught an 8-yard touchdown pass for Mustangs.

Rockport hosts the Racine Gladiators at 6:45 p.m. Friday at Marshall Middle School. Donations to ECHO again will be accepted at this week's game.
