Six Janesville teachers to be laid off

Six teaching positions are scheduled to be eliminated in the Janesville School District.

Steve Salerno, Director of Administrative and Human Services, told the school board Tuesday the teachers are in "special area" subjects like art, music and physical education. He wouldn't go into greater detail about those positions at Tuesday's meeting because the employees haven't been notified. School Board Commissioner Lori Stottler voiced concern about voting to eliminate the positions without knowing exactly which subjects would be affected. She ultimately voted for the staffing plan and layoffs.

Commissioner Tim Cullen cast the only opposing vote.

Once again, for those of you who did not attend or watch the school board meeting last night, these 6 positions are being cut as a result of decreasing student enrollment, NOT as a budget-reduction item. The staffing plan is about student-to-staff ratios and how many teachers are NEEDED. There are 18 positions being cut, I think, but the other 12 are through attrition (resignation, retirement).
.
And Dr. Salerno tried not to identify the exact positions, but a board member insisted on more specific information about these 6 positions. Put the blame where it belongs, please.

Hmmm, it really is not just traditional academics that allows a child to grow. Cut these programs and you can count a lot of children out of a wonderful future in these fields!

"They make a child healthy both mind and body." APPLAUSE! APPLAUSE! I'm thrilled to see that SOME people in Janesville "get it"! In a time of great stress (as with the economy and struggling families), these type of classes are vital. Shame on the school districts who continually, year after year, always looks to the arts and music as the first place to cut budgets, space, and teachers.

Art, gym and band are not "special area" subjects. They make a child healthy both mind and body. Stupid Janesville.

It would be nice if administrative positions were cut. These "special" areas are vital to the wellbeing of our children and our community.

I would just like to say it would sure be nice if companies would keep their mouths shut until people are told they have been canned. How many people must live in fear now until things are finalized?
