Versatility and exceptional team play will be highlighted Wednesday night at the eighth annual Milton Athletic Hall of Fame induction dinner.

The individual inductees will include four of Milton High School’s most versatile athletes—11-letter winners Kristy Roherty and Jerry Chase, 10-letter winner Roger Reed, and Scott Whitmore, quarterback of the 1986 WIAA Division 3 state championship football team and University of Wisconsin baseball standout.

A full team also will be honored for the first time with the induction of Milton Union’s unbeaten 1965 football squad.

The event begins with cocktails at 6 p.m. at the Countryside Inn, located east of Milton on Highway 59. Dinner is at 6:30, followed by the program.

A limited number of tickets may be available by calling the office of Scott McCarthy at (608) 314-3800.

Roherty, a 1999 Milton High graduate, lettered four times each in basketball and softball and three times in softball. She also was an All-Southern Lakes first-team selection 10 times, while leading her teams to two conference basketball championships and one each in softball and volleyball.

After ending her high school career as a first-team all-state repeater in softball, Roherty went to Southeast Missouri State as a scholarship basketball player. She received the Scholar Athlete Award in her conference three straight years and went on to coach basketball at Concordia University in River Forest, Ill., from 2003-06.

Chase received the American Legion Medal, recognizing him as Milton Union’s top senior athlete in 1957. That came after he lettered four times each in basketball and baseball and three times in football.

He played on Madison Suburban championship teams in basketball (1956) and baseball (1956, 1957), and he was named all-conference in both sports as a junior and senior.

Chase went on to a five-sport career at Beloit College that included football, basketball, baseball, wrestling and track between 1957 and 1961.

Reed also was an American Legion Medal winner as Milton High’s top senior athlete in 1972. He earned four letters in basketball and three each in football and baseball.

As an All-Central Suburban split end his senior year, Reed set a school record with 46 pass receptions for 521 yards and eight touchdowns. He also had five pass interceptions as an all-conference defensive back.

Reed earned an athletic scholarship to Milton College, where he lettered four times in baseball and once each in football and basketball.

As starting quarterback, Whitmore led Milton to 1985 and 1986 Southern Lakes football championships. The 1986 team went 13-0, topped off by a 38-20 victory over Northland Pines in the state title game.

After also lettering three times in baseball and earning all-conference honors as a pitcher and shortstop, Whitmore was on conference championship teams in football and baseball at UW-Whitewater. He led his baseball team to the college World Series in 1989 and was the All-WIAC shortstop.

Whitmore transferred to UW-Madison as a junior and had immediate success in baseball. He started 57 of 60 games at shortstop and batted cleanup his junior year, and he earned All-Big Ten first-team academic honors in 1990.

In the pre-WIAA playoff years, the 1965 football season produced Milton’s first unbeaten season since 1944. Only the 1986 state championship team has gone unbeaten since then.

Milton Union won the Madison Suburban Central Division championship in an 18-school conference, highlighted by a 14-0 victory over previously unbeaten Waunakee in the season finale. Coach Jack Gallun’s powerhouse team finished eighth the state ratings in an era before classes or divisions.

Milton’s all-conference selections were Ken Austin, tackle; Bruce Bass, tackle; Terry DeBussey, running back; Dick Garvin, guard; Rod Hilton, end; Dan Oberbruner, center; and Ken (Skip) Oberbruner, quarterback, all of whom played both ways. Skip Oberbruner, DeBussey and Rod Hilton received all-state honorable mention.
