— The Mercy Regional Cancer Center of Janesville was granted three-year approval with commendation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons and received the 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award.

Approval by the commission is given to facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer and agree to undergo an evaluation and review of performance. Facilities must undergo an on-site review every three years to maintain approval.

The achievement award recognizes cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. Recipients are judged on nine areas of program activity and the evaluation of 36 standards.

The commission, comprising 40 national organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients, sets the standards for cancer programs. Receiving care at a commission-approved cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to comprehensive care, information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options and more. Visit www.fac.org/cancer/index.html for more information about the commission.
