WCLO's Steve Benton reports on the efforts of local tourism officials to keep the I-90 tourist information center open.

— Governor Jim Doyle's proposed state budget includes $160,000 to keep eight tourist information centers along the Interstate open. That's a fraction of what it costs to run the centers.

Janesville Convention and Vistors Bureau Director, Christine Rebout, says $25,000 of that would be available to keep the Beloit center open. If local officials develop a plan, which may include volunteers to man the center, they would still need other funds.

Rebout, and other regional tourism professionals, are scheduled to attend a meeting with state officials Wednesday to get details of how the funding would work. She says local tourism officials will have a better idea of whether their initial plans will work following the meeting.
