Craig regains share of Big Eight baseball lead

MADISON — Janesville Craig moved back into a first-place tie in Big Eight baseball with a 9-5 victory over Madison East on Thursday.

The Cougars (8-1, 5-1) put the scrappy Purgolders (2-4, 2-4) away with a four-run fifth inning.

Nick Whalen led off with a single and then scored on Dylan Grall’s towering home run against the wind to left. Tom McCulloch delivered a two-out single, Nick Weber beat out an infield hit and Zach Bayreuther then delivered a two-run double to ive the Cougars an 8-5 lead.

“That gave us a little cushion,” Craig coach Victor Herbst said. “East hung around all night. They were a little pesky.’’

Bayreuther walked and scored on an infield out in first for the Cougars. Craig then added three in the second on RBI singles by Bayreuther and Whalen and an RBI ground-out by starting pitcher Brett Fredricks.

“We played a little sluggish, but we played well enough to win,” Herbst said. “Fredricks did a good job keeping it under control. Defensively we let him down a little bit.”

The Cougars have a Big Eight doubleheader at Verona at 11 a.m. Saturday.
