The department has faced criticism in the past for its mowing schedule. WCLO's Beth Wheelock reports.

The City of Janesville is ready to get a jump on its mowing schedule, something that has dissatisfied citizens in the past.

Parks Director Tom Presny says sometimes his department is challenged because there isn't adequate staff or mowing equipment.

Presny says the city has recent acquisitions that add to the workload. For example, the city is now responsible for 90 additional acres in Oakhill Cemetery.

Operations Director John Whitcomb says the city also mows lawns with code violations on a complaint basis. Those are areas with grass taller than twelve inches. The city charges the property owner for the expense, at about $120 an hour.

Presny hopes to start mowing the city parks system's more than 600 acres later this week.
