— A strong defense and an efficient offense carried Janesville Craig’s girls soccer team to the Fond du Lac Tournament title on Saturday.

The Cougars (3-1) beat host Fond du Lac, 2-1 in Saturday’s first game, and then defeated Manitowoc 4-1 in the second game. Craig High finished 3-0 in its pool in the tournament.

“We played pretty well, and it started with our defense,” Craig coach Bill McCabe said.

“We’ve got eight games in 10 days, so this was a great way to get things started.”

Gretchen Westphal had a goal and an assist in the win over Fond du Lac, while Nicole Gutzman scored twice against Manitowoc.

Craig High will host Beloit Memorial in a Big Eight Conference game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
