Craig wins tourney opener
FOND DU LAC Janesville Craig High bounced back from an opening-game loss to down Lomira, 4-0, in the first game of the Kristin Schneider Memorial Invite at Fond du Lac on Friday afternoon.
The Cougars (1-1) play Fond du Lac at 10 a.m. today, and Manitowoc at 1 p.m.
Kelsey Kennedy had an assist and a goal, and Nicole Gutzman had two assists in the Cougar victory Friday.
Just as the Cougars did against Sun Prairie in their opening game Thursday, Craig spent most of the time in their opponent’s half of the field Friday. But instead of a 2-1 loss they suffered against the Cardinals, this time the Cougars took advantage of their opportunities.
“This time we finished with goals,” Craig coach Bill McCabe said. “Every one got in and got good playing time. We were able to rest their legs, and the subs did a nice job.
“Our defense was really solid, and we moved the ball.”
Today’s challenges will be tougher.
“Fond du Lac has a really good program,” McCabe said. “We’ll have to be ready to play.”
