— After starting the Big Eight Conference softball season 3-0, Janesville Craig has suffered back-to-back one-run losses.

The Cougars lost 2-1 to Middleton on Wednesday, a day after losing by the same score to Madison Memorial.

“We’ve been close and have had our chances in both games, but we just can’t come up with that big hit when we need it,” Craig High coach Dan Bayreuther said. “Our pitching has been really solid, and today, Paige Owens probably deserved a better fate.

“It was another good high school softball game, we just came out on the short end.”

The Cougars (5-4, 3-2) scored first in the top of the third. Haley Bayreuther, who had two of Craig’s four hits, doubled with one out. The freshman went to third on Audrey Freeman’s single and scored on a Cardinal error.

Craig had runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and sixth, but could not push across a run.

Owens, a sophomore, struck out five and allowed only four hits in suffering the loss.

Craig High will host Janesville Parker at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Dawson Ball Field.
