— The Janesville Parker High boys golf team is going green.

The Vikings have only one senior in the varsity lineup, and with two freshmen among the top five golfers, coach Ron Cramer knows his team is a year or two away from challenging in the Big Eight Conference.

“We’ve got 19 freshmen out, and although it’s the most talented freshmen class we’ve had, they’re still only freshmen,” Cramer said. “”There’s obviously a big difference between golf at the junior high level and golf at the high school varsity level.

“We just want to show improvement as a team. There’s a lot of golf to be played, and the key is to try and improve each and every time out.”

Parker lost its top two golfers from a year ago in Sam Larson and Andrew Tearman.

The Vikings, 1-7 in Big Eight dual meets a year ago, but fifth in the conference tournament, started the 2009 conference season by beating Madison East but losing to Beloit Memorial.

Cramer said his top five golfers have seperated themselves from the rest of the pack. Senior Eric Benzel, sophomore Tyler Brossard and junior Ron Ludwig all played varsity at some point a year ago. Rounding out the top five are freshmen Payton Graham and Dustin Richards. Graham had the low round in the Big Eight opener with an 86 at Krueger Golf Course.

“All five of those guys are capable of being our medalist at any one of our matches or tournaments,” Cramer said. “Hopefully, the competition is good between them and they push each other.

“We’ll have the opportunity to play a lot of different courses and under different conditions.”
