Parker falls to Sun Prairie, Craig wins

JANESVILLE Not much went right for the Janesville Parker High baseball team Wednesday afternoon.
The Vikings fell behind early, kicked the ball around defensively and didn’t have much life in a 15-3 Big Eight Conference loss to Sun Prairie at Riverside Park.
Sun Prairie (4-1, 3-1) jumped to a 6-0 lead in the second inning and never let up. The Cardinals banged out 15 hits off of five Parker pitchers.
“The key for us if we’re going to be successful in this league is pitching and defense, and we didn’t do either tonight,” Parker coach Brian Martin said.
“And we didn’t react very well to that big inning that they had, either. That came early enough in the game where we still had time to come back, and we did, cutting the lead to 6-2. But then our pitching and defense let us down.”
Sun Prairie got six runs in the second off Parker starter Alex Koel. David Diaz had the big blow in the inning with a two-run double.
Parker (2-3, 1-2) got a run back in the third on when Tanner Moe scored on a passed ball, and cut the deficit to four in the fourth on Matt Fiedler’s RBI single.
The Cardinals blew the game open with a four-run fifth and added five more in the sixth as the game was halted after six innings due to the 10-run rule.
Sun Prairie starter Ryan Tanner went the distance in picking up the win. The right-hander did not walk a batter and struck out five.
With a game today at Verona, and city bragging rights on tap Friday with Janesville Craig, Martin hopes his team can erase any memory of the Sun Prairie debacle.
“That’s one thing about this game, there’s always tomorrow,” Martin said. “We didn’t play very well at all tonight, but we get a chance to get right back on track tomorrow.
“We’re a much better team than we showed tonight. There’s no excuse for the way we played.”

Craig 9, Middleton 4—The Cougars moved into a tie for first place in the Big Eight Conference with the impressive road win over the defending champion Cardinals.
Charlie Meyer’s three-run triple in the sixth broke the game open as the Cougars improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big Eight. Craig High finished with only four hits, but took advantage of 12 walks and five Middleton errors to pick up the win.
“Anytime you can get a win on the road over a quality opponent like Middleton, you have to be happy,” Craig High coach Victor Herbst said.
“We only had four hits, but they came in the clutch, especially Charlie’s triple in the sixth. That was huge.”
Sophomore Cody Steed started for the Cougars and picked up the win. The right-hander struck out six and allowed only four hits. Zach Bayreuther pitched the last three innings to pick up the save. Bayreuther surrendered only one unearned run.
Middleton led 1-0 in the second before the Cougars took the lead for good with a three-run inning. Christian DeCremer had an RBI single in the inning and Steed helped his own cause with an RBI groundout.
The Cougars will host cross-town rival Janesville Parker at 5 p.m. Friday at Riverside Park.
