The Janesville Parker High boys and girls track and field teams opened the outdoor season Tuesday with mixed results.
The Parker boys, behind two wins from Lavell Hewlett, Calvin Nauer and Ryan Shelton, upended Middleton, 78-63, in a Big Eight Conference dual meet at Monterey Stadium.
The Viking girls, despite three victories from senior superstar Shelby Demos, dropped a 86-55 dual to the Cardinals.
This is the first season that the Big Eight will not crown dual meet champions. Parker is not scheduled to compete against Madison La Follette, Madison Memorial and Verona.
“Those are three pretty good programs, and you always want to compete against the best,” Parker boys coach Joe Dye said.
“But it was a good start for us. I was really pleased with how we competed as a team, and hopefully, we can continue to improve.”
Hewlett won the 100 and 400, while Shelton sprinted to victory in the 200 and also won the long jump. Nauer picked up points by winning the shot put and discus.
Other winners for the Vikings were Paul Tlusty in the 300 intermediate hurdles, M. Jay Bouska in the high jump, Nick Cahill in triple jump and Cody Speaker in pole vault.
Demos won the high jump, 100 high hurdles and 300 low hurdles to pace the Parker girls. Other Parker winners were Niquisha Kenerson in the 100, Erika Moen in the discus and Sadie Johnson in the 400.
“Middleton’s got a nice team, and we were a little shorthanded with some injuries,” Parker girls coach Dave Lehmann said.
“Shelby had her usual great meet, and we had some other girls step up and do a good job, too.”
