Both the Janesville Craig and Janesville Parker high school boys tennis teams won Big Eight Conference openers Tuesday night.

n Craig 4, Sun Prairie 3—Winning a tiebreaker in the first set of the No. 1 doubles meet helped the Cougars edge past visiting Sun Prairie.

Steve Mickelson and Ben Tanko broke serve, and then closed out Matt Montgomery and Alex Grencik, 7-5, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.

“If that doesn’t go our way, who knows?” said Craig coach Gary Hallowell.

Stewart Winter and Derek Masters provided wins for Craig at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Adam Voskuill and Ben Dorscheid recorded the Cougars’ other victory at No. 2 doubles.

“We’re real, real young,” Hallowell said. “Masters is a freshman, and he came through.

“We watched a tape on mental toughness instead of practicing (Monday), and we came out with a lot of confidence. I think that really helped us.”

The Cougars will be at home next Tuesday against Beloit Memorial.
