Doubleheader sweep for Warhawk softball

— Jessica Stang earned two pitching victories as she led UW-Whitewater to a doubleheader sweep of WIAC foe La Crosse, 4-0 and 6-4, here Tuesday.

The Warhawks improved to 10-0 in the WIAC, and opened a two-game lead over second-place Eau Claire (8-2). La Crosse dropped to 6-4 and 21-9 overall.

Stang pitched a complete-game shutout in the first game. She struck out eight and walked only one while allowing just six hits.

The sophomore lefthander then was called into the second game in the fourth inning and allowed only two hits the rest of the way. She improved to 12-1 with the two wins.

Kate McDonnell hit her first homer of the season in the first game, while Lauren Cruz doubled in two runs.

Catcher Liz Yucuis smacked two homers and had three RBIs in the second game. She has five homers this season.

Cruz belted her seventh homer of the season and drove in three runs.

The Warhawks, 23-3 overall, play a nonconference game at Lawrence. The Warhawks then return home for WIAC doubleheaders against UW-Superior on Saturday and UW-Eau Claire on Sunday.
