Craig softball team falls in extra innings

JANESVILLE — The Janesville Craig High softball team lost a heartbreaker Tuesday.

Jazie Buckingham ripped a RBI triple in the 11th inning to lift Madison Memorial to a 2-1 Big Eight Conference victory over the Cougars at Dawson Ball Field.

The Cougars (5-3, 3-1) led 1-0 in the seventh, but the Spartans tied the game to force extra innings.

“We had some chances to win this, but we couldn’t push a run across,” Craig High coach Dan Bayreuther said. “It was a great high school softball game, but we came out on the wrong end.”

Bailie Whittaker, despite suffering the loss, threw very well for the Cougars. The sophomore allowed only five hits and struck out seven. Memorial’s Lindsey Umberger, a University of Tennessee recruit, finished 1-for-4 and did not figure in either Spartan runs.

“Bailie was fantastic again today,” Bayreuther said. “She did a great job of mixing up her pitches. We just couldn’t give her enough support.”

Haley Bayreuther had two of Craig’s six hits, while Gabrielle Cassady scored the Cougars’ only run in the fourth on an RBI single by Jillynn Mortensen.
