WCLO's Steve Benton reports on the state's utility moratorium on disconnections is April 15th

RSS

— Wednesday, April 15th, is more than a deadline for filing taxes. It's also the end of the moratorium on power cutoffs in the state.

Alliant Energy spokesman, Steve Schultz, says they understand a lot of people are having trouble because of the economy, but if they're in arrears, they need to contact them immediately.

Over the winter months, Wisconsin utilities are not allowed to turn off gas or electricity to residences. April 15th is the first day cut-offs are allowed.

Schultz says the company looks at each case separately as they try to work out payment plans with customers, and he says cutting off power is the last thing they want to do.

The number of customers 60 days or more in arrears has grown to 39,500, up from about 31,000 last year. The amount of money owed the company by customers is also up slightly over last year at about $14 million.

i got a new meter today.anyone else? i was so excited!i wonder how much that is going to cost me lol!alliant is a monopoly, and dont say one has choices, because they dont.if your utilities get shut off the city of janesville evicts you off your property, so wheres the choice? you pay your bill or your homeless.who are they to tell you that you have to leave your property? i think the city is going to figure out how to profit off this disaster thats why their doing it, never before has this made headlines, 60,000 people were up for disconnection last year and there was no talk of making people leave their homes, theres a hidden agenda somewhere.lol always is with this city and county.

How is it confusing? The moratorium is on disconnections. They are starting to disconnect people again. Surely, you understand simple English.

The headline is very confusing. Surely, it should be "Alliant prepares for the end of the moratorium on cut-offs."
