Hockey fans might soon be able to buy a beer at the Janesville Ice Arena, but they won't be able to buy hard alcohol there.

The City Council approved an ordinance Monday allowing fermented malt beverages at the ice arena. Some council members suggested it should be limited to beer sales only. However, the council decided to allow all fermented malt beverages, which includes wine coolers.

Now that the council has approved the ordinance, Wisconsin Hockey Partners, LLC needs to apply for an alcohol license. That license isn't guaranteed, since the ordinance was approved on a 4-3 vote. Council President Amy Loasching voted to approve the ordinance, but Monday's meeting was her last on the council. Newcomer Frank Perrotto will be casting his swing vote on the issue when it comes back to council.
