UW-Whitewater softballs splits games against Dubuque
DUBUQUE, IOWA The University of Dubuque upset visiting UW-Whitewater in the first game, but the Warhawks came back to gain a split of the nonconference softball doubleheader Thursday.
Dubuque won the first game, 5-3, behind a four-run fifth inning. Whitewater came back to win the second game, 3-0, behind the pitching of Dianna Frisbie.
The Warhawks, now 19-3, got RBIs from Ashley Smith, Suzanne Gersich and Lauren Cruz to take a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning. The Spartans responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, which was enough to give Whitewater only its third loss of the year and snapped a seven-game winning streak.
Dubuque (8-16) could not solve Whitewater starter Frisbie in the second game. She allowed only two hits and four walks, before Jessica Stang came in to get the final two outs of the game.
Amy Gahl, Smith and Amanda LeBeau each had an RBI in the win.
The Warhawks play Illinois Wesleyan today in a nonconference game at van Steenderen field at 3 p.m.
