La Follette ends Craig's winning streak

A four-game winning streak came to an end Thursday for Janesville Craig’s baseball team.

Madison La Follette scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly to upend the Cougars, 9-8 in nine innings, in a Big Eight Conference thriller at Warner Park in Madison.

Craig (4-1, 1-1) trailed 7-0 after one inning, but battled back and eventually tied the game thanks to Charlie Meyer’s two-run single in the top of the seventh.

“We didn’t come out to play right away, and that cost us,” Craig High coach Vic Herbst said of the early 7-0 deficit. “Fortunately, the team showed some moxie and fought its way back.

“Mike Davis and Zach Bayreuther did a great job of pitching. They kept us in the game after we got down early and gave us a chance.”

Tyler Flood’s first-inning grand slam highlighted the Lancers’ 10-hit attack.

Meyer and Christian DeCremer had two hits each for Craig and drove in five runs.

The Cougars will host state-ranked Madison Memorial at 5 p.m. Monday at Riverside Park.
