Janesville and Beloit tourist center get busy
Podcast Episode
WCLO's Steve Benton reports on how Janesville tourism officials are getting ready for a busy summer
ROCK COUNTY Tourists on I-90 no longer have the Beloit tourist information center, or any of the other six similar centers around the state, to turn to for information.
Janesville and Beloit tourism officials are preparing for the possibility of dealing with the extra load. Janesville tourism director, Christine Rebout, says in 2008, 275,000 people sought information at the Beloit center. She would like to see information posted at the Beloit I-90 rest area to point travelers to Beloit or Janesville tourism centers.
Rebout says she and Martha Mitchell from Beloit, are also still holding talks with the state about running the I-90 tourism center with local staff. But there's an additional consideration. It costs about $50,000 a year to operate the building. Rebout says they're looking at corporate sponsors, and going directly to some of the tourist attractions in the state, for support.
