JANESVILLE The Janesville Parker High baseball team went back to the basics in picking up a win Thursday afternoon.
The Vikings got solid pitching, timely hitting and a strong defensive effort in a 7-2 win over Madison West in Big Eight Conference play at Riverside Park.
Parker (2-2, 1-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to Tyler Tuebert’s two-run triple and pulled away thanks to eight West errors.
“It was a combination of things today,” Parker coach Brian Martin said. “We swung the bats better, our pitchers threw strikes, and the defense made the plays when it had to.
“Good things are going to happen when you do that, and hopefully, the guys are start to realize that. We’re sitting at 2-2 right now, and we could just as easily be 4-0.”
Parker starter Andy Kersten was solid in his first varsity start. The sophomore allowed only one unearned run in four innings of work and did not walk a batter. The righthander scattered five hits and struck out one.
“Andy had kind of a rough outing his last time out,” Martin said. “He gave up a home run Tuesday night at East, but tonight he came back and really threw well. He was in control, and we got him a couple of runs early that helped him relax a little bit.
“Being a sophomore, he’s only going to get better as he gets more and more varsity experience.”
Parker led 4-1 in the fifth before tacking on two more runs. Matt Fiedler drove in Alex Koel with the first run on an RBI single, and later scored on a West throwing error.
West had the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings but could only manage one run. Parker sophomore Kyle Johnson worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and worked a scoreless seventh to pick up his first save.
Koel and Brodie Meehan had four of Parker’s seven hits, while the Vikings ran wild on the base paths with five steals.
“We’ve got Verona on Monday, so hopefully, we can build off of this win and start a little streak going,” Martin said.
“After a couple of tough losses, we needed this one. It’s a long season, but when you’re as young as we are, you need to build confidence.”
