— The Rock County SWAT team spent nearly four hours early this morning negotiating with a man after he threatened to shoot himself.

Deputies responded to 5621 N. McNichols Drive, Milton, at 9:55 p.m. Monday after learning Gary W. Zastrow, 41, had been drinking and had threatened to shoot himself. Deputies tried to make telephone contact several times but were unsuccessful, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

By midnight, the SWAT team and negotiators were called and established telephone communications with Zastrow, who lives at the address.

Zastrow surrendered 3:48 a.m. and was taken into custody on a charge of disorderly conduct while armed.

Deputies reported taking six rifles, a handgun and assorted ammunition from the house.

NetworkingAngel... Thank you!!! That's what I was saying. And "reaching out for help" with guns? Whoa... If he wants to kill himself, that's one thing... but he has kids and lives in an area with neighbors that had to have their sleep interrupted (and yes, my husband personally knows a neighbor...) Also, he has a good job... some cars and 2 boats... a dog and 2 beautiful amazing children.... and money.

Wow... he has a lot to be depressed about! Trade places with the 13% of Rock County residents that are unemployed!!!

Of course its public record- however how many would have ran down to the station to get the info at 8am in the morning? It could have been posted later, so these kids could have been properly informed- so you get a clue.

Yeah, shame on the Gazette for posting something that anyone could have found out about. If they wouldn't have posted the name, I'm sure one (or many) of the commenters would have done it for them. It's public record who was involved in the standoff. That is the least of this family's worries. Some people need to get a clue.

The other thing to be said is SHAME ON THE GAZETTE- for posting this mans name before his x-wife and children were even notified. Nice that the kids were sent off to school as a normal morning and then bombarded. Thumbs up to the school for taking matters into their own hands and notifying mom so that she could make some decisions..Great work Gazette, name could have been inserted much later.

Looks like Networking Angel- should be NetworkingDevil..If you are so concerned about this mans children then once and for all cease your ridiculous, unfounded comments..You know nothing of this man or his state of mind.Period. Your a foolish busy body who yesterday on the other blog just kept trying to insert bogus information at any turn. OR you were trying to throw out personal information that was not necessary. Let it go..

If his intention was to really kill himself, he would have been done with it already. If he was in need of some help, there are many more ways of getting it without the need of the SWAT team. That is what is unfortunate......

You should know that gossip has no place in such a situation...

But I've alwas realized that the arrest was just the beginning...not the end of the story.

Many fail to see that. Or care.

If your a loser with no children and you did what Mr.Zastrow did.... hey no problem... chalk it up to being-screwed-by-the-man. But when you have serious psychologic problems and pull this crap?... what do you do with his 2 kids?... would you leave your children at his house or let him coach your kids football team?

You make it sound like he was making rational decisions...and then judging based on that assumption...we can't begin to know what was going on in his mind....not making excuses for him....but not judging either.

I wonder if my neighbors children were afraid of 50 red and blue flashing lights... spot lights... 20 vehicles parked down the road... officers with guns and flashlights banging on all the houses front doors... Telling people with their own problems that just need sleep.... "We have a serious situation at the Zastrow home... no its not a tornado... but yes you do need to hide in the basement."

No one ever wants to take respondsibility for their actions anymore.... its always someone elses fault... their is always an excuse with this kind of criminal... and he is a criminal... because it wasnt a social worker banging on my neighbors door telling him to stay in the basement away from windows last night... and it wasnt santa claus either.

Naive...? The rock county sheriffs department has some of the finest well trained officers in this state.... yet they needed 6 hours and a SWAT team to extract a man, sum alcohol, and a small cache of weapons.... When was Mr. Zastrow reaching out for help..... im confused?

This is the kind of guy... that is going to get out of jail/mental institution... and act like nothing ever happened... plea out to a slap on the wrist with no priors... pay his fine and go back to work... and the next time he needs a babysitter or anyone else needs a babysitter for 6 hours just call the SWAT team to watch the 41 year old thats reaching out for help...

This is far beyond the bounds of screwing up... when you put officers in the line of duty in the event of a firearm and alcohol and a SWAT Team..... you must be de-sensitised by to much television... this story reminds me of IRAQ.

Boy, what a compassionate bunch you are. I hope you never have any problems in your life that might bother anyone. If you do just shut up and suck it up, because for all the empathy you guys have, nobody will care weather you are hurting or not. I hope Gary gets the help he needs and is obviously reaching out for.

Well, the name "Zastrow" is a local....

I would bet ya a dollar for a donut, he was looking for attention. How would anyone find out he was trying to kill himself unless he called family, friends or the cops directly. Maybe someone was at the home and saw he was freaking out, but this is just ridiculous. It should be law to draw the local costs of trying to subdue this moron from his next tax return. They will for ambulance calls not paid for. The govt. will intercept their tax return for debts owed to the local ambulance or fire departments. Why can't it be done for dopes who waste our tax paid municipal funds?

Accountability anyone?
