No move for Milton mail carriers

— The United States Post Office has put a hold on the possibility of moving Milton postal carriers to the Janesville office.

As the postal service looks to consolidate and improve services, officials decided only to look at this time at post offices with rural-only delivery, spokeswoman Marge Oehlke said.

The Milton office provides city delivery, Oehlke said.

“The relocation will be readdressed at a later date this year when the postal service will re-assess the data and logistics,” Oehlke wrote in a news statement.

On March 23, Milton postal workers learned the federal office planned to analyze the cost-effectiveness of mail delivery out of Milton. If it made sense, Milton’s carriers could have been reassigned to work out of the Janesville office, Oehlke said at the time.

Oehlke expected the analysis to take two weeks.

At the time, she said no decisions had been made and no plans were in place to cut postal jobs.

The possible change followed similar changes at two other Rock County post offices. Both had rural routes.

-- In January, Clinton’s mail carriers started delivering mail out of the Beloit post office.

-- In February, Orfordville mail carriers started to work out of the Brodhead post office.

Other analyses in the region did not lead to consolidations, Oehlke said.

The postal system is analyzing 15 post offices in the region that provide rural service. None is in the greater Janesville area, Oehlke said.

I am glad it is being left along for now. Hopefully they will never make the change. Milton is growing and I can't imagine how this makes any sense financially...

Good for Milton. The Clinton Post Office delivers late because of their change. We never get our Saturday mail until at least 5pm or not at all.
