— UW-Whitewater stumbled out of the gate in the first games of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball season.

The Warhawks (6-5), slight preseason favorites to win the WIAC title, lost a doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh, 10-0 and 17-5, here Wednesday afternoon.

The Titans (7-5), who were selected by conference sports information directors to finish second to the Warhawks, collected 28 hits in the two wins.

Whitewater has won the regular-season WIAC title six of the last seven years and seven of the last nine.

In the first-game loss, Warhawk staff ace Aaron Dott had problems with the middle of the Oshkosh lineup. The junior left-hander allowed all 10 runs, but only six were earned. The Titans’ No. 4-6 hitters combined to go 7-of-11, including two doubles, two triples and a homer.

In the second game, Oshkosh jumped to a 5-0 lead before the Warhawks rallied to tie it with a five-run sixth.

Whitewater’s Kevin Zalnis’ two-run single scored Sam Petrasko and Ben Kuhlmann for the Warhawks’ first two runs.

After Zanis stole second, Warhawk designated hitter Tom Zimmerman drove him home with another single. Ryan Leavitt walked.

Nick Rechlitz then tied the game with a single that drove in Zimmerman, and Leavitt scored when Rechlitz got into an inning-ending rundown.

Oshkosh responded with nine runs in the bottom of the inning, including a two-run homer by Blake Berger and a two-run double by Mickey Fadness. The Titans had eight hits off three pitchers in the inning, and the Warhawks helped by committing two errors.

Fadness added a three-run homer in the eighth inning.
