— The Edgerton High football team hoped to exorcise a couple demons Friday night against Evansville.

Instead, the Crimson Tide again was terrorized by Andrew Keister and Derek Cashore.

Cashore ran for 133 yards and four touchdowns, while Keister scampered for 110 yards and a touchdown as the unbeaten Blue Devils overcame a halftime deficit and pulled away for a 35-23 Rock Valley North Conference win.

The fifth-ranked Blue Devils improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Rock North as they remained tied for the top spot with McFarland. The 10th-ranked Crimson Tide slipped to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Rock North.

Edgerton led 16-14 at the half, but the Blue Devils controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball in the second half to take control. Evansville took the lead for good on Cashore’s 4-yard run with 6:47 left in the third and made it 28-16 on Cashore’s 19-yard jaunt around right end four minutes later.

“I’m really proud of our kids for battling the way they did, but we were kind of doing it with smoke and mirrors in the second half,” Edgerton coach Mike Gregory said. “They (the Blue Devils) really controlled the line of scrimmage in the second half, and we were kind of hanging on.

“But we still had a chance when we cut it to 28-23, but then Keister goes on that long run to seal it for them. I’ve said all along that he is the difference-maker in our conference, and he proved it again tonight.”

Edgerton cut the deficit to five on Bryan Gregory’s 72-yard pass to Josh Eastman with 4:53 left and had Evansville 2nd-and-18 on its ensuing possession. But Keister, the Rock Valley Back of the Year the last two seasons, got loose for a 40-yard gainto the Edgerton 10-yard line. Cashore capped the drive with his fourth touchdown of the game to make it 35-23 with 1:06 left to play.

Kesiter said Evansville’s game plan was to stay on the attack.

“We tried to be as physical as we could the whole game because we knew Edgerton had eight guys going both ways,” Keister said. “Coach (Ron Grovesteen) talked about that at halftime and said to keep coming after them.

“Our line did a great job, and Derek got off some big runs. I was just happy to sneak in a couple myself.”

Gregory threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns, but was forced to scramble most of the night. The senior hit Kyle Stearns on a 41-yard scoring play to put Edgerton ahead 10-7 early in the second quarter, but Cashore responded for the Blue Devils with a 2-yard touchdown run with 9:13 left in the half after they got the ball at the 3 by recovering a fumbled punt.

Evansville has now beaten Edgerton 12 of the last 13 years, including a 95-15 scoring advantage the two previous games. But Grovesteen knew his team was going to see a different Crimson Tide team this time.

“You can’t take anything away from Edgerton. They’re a tough team,” Grovesteen said. “Our defense played very well tonight against a very good passing offense, and we just made some plays when we had to.”
