— Preliminary autopsy results point to suicide as the cause of death for a Beloit Turner High School graduate found dead Monday afternoon in a cemetery on the UW-Whitewater campus, Jefferson County Coroner Patrick Theder said.

Whitewater police still are investigating the circumstances leading to the death of Joseph R. Hummer, 18, but the autopsy did not reveal any foul play or a medical condition, Theder said.

“There was evidence that he hung himself,” Theder said.

Theder is waiting for toxicology results before making a final ruling.

Maintenance workers discovered Hummer, a UW-Whitewater freshman, in the northeast corner of Calvary Cemetery at 2:59 p.m., according to a press release from Whitewater police.

Hummer graduated second in the Turner High School class of 2008.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Daley-Murphy-Wisch funeral home in Beloit. A funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Beloit.

Counseling services are available for UW-W students, faculty and staff at University Health and Counseling Services.
