— The first Big Eight Conference Grade Level Challenge was a rousing success for the Janesville Craig High School’s girls and boys cross country teams.

The Craig girls finished first in the 10-team event with 29 points, while the Cougar boys were second with 39.

Races were held at the freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior levels for both boys and girls.

“I think the consensus for us, and really everybody involved, was that this is a fun format,” Craig coach Brian Lawton said. “You see kids in a different light in a race like this because you get to see some of the younger kids run out front.

“And the team races were really exciting because you didn’t know which team was going to win until the very last runners crossed the finish line.”

Craig’s Tommy Meister was the top city finisher. Meister won the boys freshmen race in 17:19.05.

The Cougars’ Cassidi Running was second in the girls senior class race, and Megan Muhs was second in the junior class race.

Parker’s top finisher was Nicki Bakke, who was fourth in the girls senior class race.
