Waunakee manhandles Milton
Waunakee Milton High didn’t waste much time making its mark on the new prep football season with a stunning season-opening victory against Badger North Conference power DeForest last week.
But reality set in Friday night when the Red Hawks traveled to powerful Waunakee to face a program that hadn’t lost at home in 10 years.
The streak is now at 60 games and counting as Waunakee used its traditionally tough defense—that added a new twist just for Milton—to roll to an impressive 41-0 victory in the nonconference matchup.
“The wheels fell off today,” Milton coach Jeff Bachinski said.
The key mistake was an interception that quarterback Zach Fry tossed on a screen pass that was intended for running back Hank McIvor with just less than eight minutes left in the first half, and Waunakee holding a 7-0 lead.
Defensive back Andrew Weber stepped in front of the short pass and sprinted 45 yards for a touchdown with 7:12 left before the break to give Waunakee a 14-0 lead and some breathing room.
It didn’t help that McIvor went out on the next series with an ankle injury and never returned.
Waunakee used a 3-3-5 defense and tried to put as much pressure on Fry as possible.
“Our kids sat up and took notice when they saw film of what Milton did to DeForest last week,” Waunakee coach Par Rice said.
