Verona, Middleton get second wins

Verona High School kept the lid on visiting Madison Memorial en route to a 21-7 victory in Big Eight Conference football Friday night.

After the Spartans (0-2) recovered a fumbled punt on the Wildcats’ 20 and scored on Ron ovington’s 1-yard run, it was all Verona as the conference’s newest member went to 2-0.

The Wildcats scored one TD in each of the first, second and third quarters for the winning margin.

The Spartans were held to seven first downs on 66 yards rushing and 59 yards passing.

Verona’s Cameron Bathe gained 126 yards on 14 carries. The Wildcats rushed for 236 yards on 47 attemtps.

Middleton 30, West 14—The visiting Cardinals (2-0) jumped out to a 21-0 lead en route to a Big Eight Conference victory.

Leighton Settle had 130 yards rushing for West (1-1) and also returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.

Sun Prairie 21, La Follette 14—Karl Huemmer rushed for 239 yards on 28 carries and all three Sun Prairie touchdowns as the Cardinals (1-1) topped Madison La Follette (0-2) in a battle of last year’s Big Eight Conference co-champions.

Both teams have been depleted with suspensions, but Sun Prairie took a 14-0 halftime lead on scoring runs of 22 and 3 yards.

Huemmer’s 55-yard scoring run in the third quarter put the Cardinals on top 21-7.

La Follette scored with 55 seconds left in the game, but Sun Prairie recovered the onside kick.
