WCLO's Stan Stricker reports on railroad business in smaller towns

RSS

Local railroad traffic may be on the increase.

Wisconsin and Southern Railroad Community Development Manager Ken Lucht says the business is growing. Lucht says a tremendous amount of industry along the rail route has expanded in recent years. He predicts the amount of freight hauled by Wisconsin and Southern will increase 25% in Rock and Walworth counties by 2010. Many new industries are considering locating in small towns along the railroad, to allow transportation choices. He says the railroad business is improving in part because or rising fuel prices.

The trend is bitter sweet, because even though some businesses are inquiring about the use of rail, the train engines still run on diesel.
