— Lakeside Lutheran football coach Paul Bauer certainly won’t need to watch game film to figure out what went wrong against Walworth Big Foot.

The shell-shocked Warriors (5-5) lost six fumbles and failed to score en route to a painful 49-0 loss against top-ranked Walworth Big Foot in a WIAA Division 4 first-round playoff game here Tuesday night.

With the easy victory, Big Foot (10-0) advanced to the second round to host Winnebago Lutheran (8-2) on Saturday. The Vikings advanced by pummeling Poynette, 35-0.

“These guys, especially our seniors, from day one have come in and really wanted to advance beyond last year,” said Big Foot coach Rodney Wedig, whose championship team fell in the second round a year ago. “It was almost a relief that it’s playoff time.”

Wedig was even more relieved that he got to limit the playing time of his star offensive lineman, Travis Frederick, who suffered a broken arm last Thursday against Palmyra-Eagle.

“I’m really happy that I got go out there today and play with the cast at full speed,” Frederick said. “I didn’t play a ton, but it was enough to get me used to it and get me going with it.”

The rest of the Chiefs got going after recovering a fumble at the Warriors’ 33-yard line on the third play of the game.

Three plays later, running back Mike Walker notched a 14-yard touchdown run to put his team up 7-0. On the ensuing Lakeside drive, Chiefs linebacker Matt Fogerty scooped up another fumble and ran 36 yards for another touchdown.

Big Foot used its early momentum to deliver a 21-point second quarter knockout punch. Mike Crusan started the charge with a 5-yard touchdown run, Walker added a 44-yard touchdown reception from Mike Dowden, and T.J. Schaid had a 6-yard touchdown run.

“On one of the first cold nights, we hit them a few times, and the ball popped loose, which was huge,” Wedig said. “On a night like this, the balls are a little harder and the hits hurt a little more.”

Dowden and Nic Campion added a few more hits in the second half with touchdown runs of 14 and 23 yards, respectively.
