Lake Geneva Badger’s high-powered football team went down shooting.

Badger High rolled up 422 yards from scrimmage Tuesday night, but it wasn’t quite enough. Big Eight co-champion Verona just enough firepower of its own to outlast the Badgers, 42-34, in a WIAA Division 2 first-round playoff game.

The host Wildcats (10-1), who had 491 yards from scrimmage, got 203 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Mason Meyer to pull out the victory and earn a second-round home game against Southern Lakes co-champion Waterford (8-2).

Badger (6-3) trailed only 35-34 until late in the fourth quarter when Meyer’s 3-yard run gave the Wildcats their final touchdown.

Senior quarterback Jared Stan led Badger with 16 carries for 108 of his team’s 249 yards rushing. He also passed for 173 yards, completing 6 of 8 attempts.

Meyer piled up his big rushing total on 24 carries. Wildcat quarterback Trevor Burmeister completed 4 of 6 passes for 138 yards and three touchdowns.
