— One candidate for Walworth County treasurer touts her experience in the office, while the other is a newcomer who claims she can bring fresh ideas.

Republican Kathy Du Bois, 60, Elkhorn, and independent Kristen L. Zerbach, 26, Elkhorn, are vying to be Walworth County's next treasurer.

The treasurer is responsible for collecting property taxes, investing county money and preparing the county's bank deposits. The treasurer will be elected to a four-year term this year after voters approved the change from a two-year term.

Du Bois has an associate's degree from Waukesha Technical College. She delivers meals to seniors with her husband. She also volunteers at her church.

She has worked in the treasurer's office since 1988 and was elected treasurer in 1996. She was elected to six, two-year terms. She resigned from the position in 2007 after being diagnosed with cancer.

Du Bois is seeking re-election after receiving a clean bill of health. Her doctor called her a cancer "survivor."

"I miss the work. I miss the people," Du Bois said. "I figure if Brett Favre can come back, so can Kathy Du Bois."

Zerbach has an associate's degree from American Continental University. She reads to students and chaperones field trips at her 8-year-old son's school.

She worked as an accounting manager for an Illinois company that recently closed. She wants to be treasurer to get involved in the community.

"The reason I chose the treasurer's position is because of my accounting background," Zerbach said. "In companies I have worked for, I've really excelled."

If elected, Du Bois promised to continue being a hands-on treasurer. She pledged to lead a good staff in a team environment.

"I know the job," she said. "I know what's required of the job and the duties."

If elected, Zerbach promised to provide good customer service.

She pledged to update the treasurer's office with new technology such as Internet tax-paying software. She added that she could help the office become more efficient.

"I know how stressful it can be to pay your property taxes," Zerbach said.

The treasurer's race is the only contested countywide race on the ballot.

James Goetz, the treasurer who was appointed in 2007 when Du Bois resigned, is not seeking the post. He will return to retirement after serving about one year.
