— The Milton School District made an error in its recent enrollment count.

District administration recently told the school board the district is down seven students this year, but it’s actually down 25 students. The high school over-counted its students by 17, and one student at Milton West Elementary was counted in error, according to a memo from the district.

The district’s enrollment this year is 3,366.

Last year’s enrollment was 3,391.

No one is pointing out that the plans for a new school is based on the argument that enrollment will continue to go up. This little error shows how wrong they are. Enrollment is going down, and given the economic downturn and the plant-closings, it's likely to continue to go down.

Current, common, American English usage is that "cannot" refers to the inability to do something while "can not" refers to the ability to choose not do something.

Again, I don't particularly care if you used the correct form or not (or the more common or not), I simply thought it was mildly ironic that you would make a potential spelling/usage error and a likely grammatical error in your criticism of the school district's arithmetic error.

cannot arose c. 1400 as an auxiliary verb; it's an orthographic (i.e. written) variation of can not. Either or is acceptable. Neither nor incorrect. You can separate them or join them. People usually join them.

polert,
I was simply pointing out the irony that someone who criticizes the school district for making an arithmetic or procedural error makes grammar and spelling errors while doing so.

The portion of your post directed at me makes little sense. My desire to communicate effectively and the hope that others will strive to do so does not mean that I am "set back a few years." A text message is different from a newspaper comment board, it depends on the content and the length of the text whether or not I write in complete sentences (on the rare occasion that I send a text message). I will assume, despite your lack of a question mark that you are asking me if my computer has "auto check" so I will address it as such. Some PROGRAMS on my computer have spelling and grammar auto-correction functions. Does that have some bearing on the fact that I can, without the use of such functions in my internet browser, form coherent, correctly spelled, sentences? You say that this message board is not a term paper. Congratulations, you have said something factually true in a complete, correct sentence. Your command that I "have a brain" is juvenile, anatomically ignorant, and brings nothing to the conversation.

I was glad to see that we agree that the error that Milton School District made is understandable. Hopefully, in the future, we can limit our discussions to our agreements and disagreements regarding the topics we post under.

I can see a few double counts being made by a system where a child has parents divorce which would allow this student to remain in district but change addresses from year to year which on a spread sheet would add up. The person reviewing this information would not know if there was 4 Robert Johnson or if it was a computer glitch. It is a easy screw up.

Bubs you most be set back a few years from everyone else. Do you text message in complete sentence with proper grammar? Does your computer have auto check, or is this the first time you heard of this. This is a message board not a term paper. So have a brain.

If I were to criticize the Milton School District for mistakes, I would avoid mispelling "cannot" and forgetting punctuation between separate clauses in "...more tax dollars..." and "...that might help." Then again, Milton School District taught me the basics of properly using English.
It was a boneheaded mistake but not necessarily indicative of a bad or failed school district.

Excellent, the system providing education can not count. They should get a new school and more tax dollars that might help.
