Verona High School retained its share of the Big Eight Conference football lead with a 42-21 win over Sun Prairie on Friday night.


The victory kept the Wildcats tied with the Middleton Cardinals, each at 7-1. Sun Prairie fells to 5-3 in the Big Eight and overall.


The Wildcats held a 28-13 halftime lead, highlighted by Jesse Newton’s 98-yard return of a missed Sun Prairie field goal.


Verona’s Cameron Bathe gained 131 yards on 13 carries, including a 53-yard touchdown run. Karl Huemmer gained 116 yards on 21 carries for Sun Prairie.
